Quay Place wins Ipswich Society 2016 Award
We are delighted to have received a High Commendation award at the Ipswich Society Awards 2016 for Quay Place, our regeneration project completed in partnership with Suffolk Mind.
Matthew Mckeague, Director of Regeneration at The Churches Conservation Trust, explained: "These annual awards are given for the buildings that are considered to have made a notable contribution to the townscape of Ipswich. Judges praised the high-quality conservation of the medieval church, the addition of the mezzanine, and the traditional materials and craftsmanship evident in the new extension."
Before the presentation of the awards Chris Wiltshire from the Ipswich Society gave an illustrated talk on all the nominations received for the year. Other projects to receive a Commendation included a local medical centre, a new school building, and a community skate park. Quay Place was honoured by being the only nominee to receive a High Commendation.
The ceremony was held at St Peter’s by the Waterfront, just up the road – and along the line of the old quayside – from St Mary at the Quay, the home of Quay Place. Like our building, St Peter’s is one of Ipswich’s three mariners’ churches, and the two have enjoyed a long association over the centuries. Attendees at the awards event expressed hope that the revitalisation of St Mary at the Quay would contribute to ongoing efforts to regenerate the Quayside area and to help re-connect the city centre with this historic part of Ipswich.
