A medieval wonder in a pretty village

This handsome square-towered church lies at the edge of the picturesque village of Aldwincle near the river Nene - the pinnacled and carved fifteenth-century tower dominates the surrounding countryside. The elegant medieval interior is almost cavernous in feel with few furnishings, offering a rare chance to see its beautiful limestone arcades and arches up close.

The seventeenth-century poet John Dryden was born nearby and baptised in the church - his grandfather was the rector. Look out for strange carved birds, beasts and other creatures on the exterior. The Chambre chantry chapel of 1489 is also of exceptional quality.

    There are steps up into churchyard and steps down into church.

    Due to the historic nature of our buildings, only a very small number of them have heating, running water or toilet facilities. The lighting is usually operated via a 'push button' timer or a motion sensor.

    12 miles north east of Kettering off A605 Oundle to Thrapston Road. At Thorpe Waterville, take country road to Aldwincle. All Saints is the first church in the village with a tower.

    Nearest railway station: Kettering (10 miles). Also on bus route number 24.
