The church where Dr Samuel Johnson was married

Dr Samuel Johnson married his wife Elizabeth "Tetty" Porter here in 1735. The seventeenth-century tower and old chancel of this large church are in the care of the CCT - but not the 'new', nineteenth-century church attached to it which was built by Sir Arthur Blomfield in 1895.

The tower was built in the Gothic Survival style between 1601-08. The interesting chancel (of 1690) retains much of its contemporary woodwork and furnishings, including a superb iron font cover by Robert Bakewell in a side chapel.

A contribution can be made towards the conservation of the church by texting DER to 70970 to donate £5, or 70191 to donate £10. Thank you for your support
