Westgate

CCT are supporting the Historic Chapels Trust (HCT) to undertake repairs across their estate of listed chapels. As part of this we are seeking expressions of interest from construction firms with experience of working in conservation who would like to be considered for the tender list for one of our larger projects.

Westgate Primitive Methodist Chapel, completed in 1871, is designated Grade II*. It is one of only two listed buildings in Westgate and has a special interest for the fact that it retains its Victorian form in its entirety, internally and externally. Generally, the chapel is in a poor condition internally with substantial repair required to the ceilings, although the building is currently watertight and continues to be maintained in a sound, good structural condition. It is currently on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register listed as being in ‘fair’ condition.

This project will focus on the most urgent repair needs at the chapel at its attached schoolroom.

The proposals seek to complete urgent repairs in order to render both buildings weather tight and structural sound.  The main proposals are as follows:

  • Re roof of south chapel slope and any required works to address ongoing water ingress at high level
  • Removal of fallen material from back (top) of plaster ceiling
  • Repairs to joists and new supports
  • Crack stitching
  • Drainage work
  • Removal of damp plaster (non-decorative) in flat to facilitate drying out.
  • Fixing open of sash windows to facilitate drying out

Timetable for procurement (subject to change)

Please submit the expression of interest form to Kathryn Moore at kathrynmoore@thecct.org.uk by 12 Noon on 31st May.

We aim to release a pre-qualification questionnaire to all appropriate applicants shortly after the 3rd June, with a return date of 12 Noon on 27th June.

Tenders will be issued to selected contractors who meet the criteria and have an acceptable quality score on 8th July

Return of tenders will be 12 Noon on 5th August.
