Umberslade

Umberslade Baptist Chapel is a Grade II* listed building located on the edge of Hockley Heath village, 5 miles south of Solihull, West Midlands.

The site comprises an enclosed churchyard housing two buildings, a wooden chapel built as a temporary construction in 1876, and a large gothic stone chapel constructed shortly afterwards with late nineteenth century additions. The chapel is on the Heritage at Risk Register as ‘Poor’ under category C.

This project will focus on the most urgent repair needs at Umberslade Baptist Church and adjacent timber chapel.

The proposals seek to complete urgent repairs in order to render both buildings weather tight and structural sound.  The main proposals are as follows:

  • Installation of full roofed scaffold to timber chapel
  • Installation of in-situ protections to internal fabric where necessary, including organ and bespoke ecclesiastical furniture
  • Careful removal of the existing slate roof and re-roofing to the timber church
  • Localised structural repair where necessary to accommodate roof repairs
  • Completion of repairs to the timber roof structure or the timber church
  • Installation of new rainwater goods to timber chapel
  • Localised repairs to the flat concrete vestry roof of the stone church
  • New over-cover to the vestry roof in order to render it weathertight
  • Localised stone mullion repair to two windows within the vestry which are close to structural failure
  • Removal of plasterwork inside the body of the stone church in order to facilitate localised crack stitching
